A former Toronto Maple Leaf has had his most recent contract terminated due to massive backlash.

Agostino's Contract Terminated

It was just announced by Swedish team Skelleftea AIK has terminated Kenny Agostino's contract due to him playing the past few seasons in Russia.

Here is a translated statement from the club's site:

"For Skelleftea AIK, the question of his attempt to end his contract with the Russian club before last season has been important. New information in the media and from other sources changes our position. We therefore choose to break the contract." General Manager Erik Forssell said.

Club director Asa Andersson went on to add, "We have had many contacts with partners, members, supporters and others with black and yellow hearts in recent days. People's love for and commitment to the club is the most important thing we have. We continue forward together and for the good of Skelleftea AIK."

Agostino reportedly stayed in Russia despite their invasion of Ukraine because the pay was better in the KHL than in other European leagues.

He was most recently in the NHL in 2020-21 where he played one game with the Maple Leafs. He also spent two seasons with the Toronto Marlies from 2019-2021 where he eventually earned himself a leadership position as an alternate captain.

He now will have to look elsewhere for his next contract and it will likely be outside of Sweden or Russia. He could potentially return to North America but if he does it would be on an AHL contract.
