The Maple Leafs will once again face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The history between these two teams is well known by fans, and the Leafs will look to right their wrongs from last playoffs. With the daunting task ahead of them, Leafs Captain John Tavares shared his thoughts on the matchup.
Leafs Ready For a Challenge
Whether or not the Leafs can finally overcome their playoff woes has been a topic of conversation all year, and the implications of losing in the first round this year aren't something fans and players alike want to think about. Captain John Tavares shared his thoughts on how the Leafs should approach the upcoming series, and what they can do to play their best hockey.
"Well, I think we're aware of (the history) obviously, no doubt, but all we can do is prepare for what's in front of us, and the opportunity that we have at hand. And we know we have an incredible fan base and an organization, a team that has a tremendous, rich, rich history that is really special.»
Clearly the support of Leafs fans weighs heavy on the mind of their Captain. For an organization as storied as Toronto, the chance to finally break their playoff curse and make a run for the Cup would mean a lot.
"So, don't let the pressure outweigh the pleasure of this opportunity, and the excitement that we have to go out there and compete. So yeah, you're aware of that, but at the same time all we can do is prepare for what's ahead, and be at our best when we meet this challenge."
The Leafs have nothing left to lose at this point, so their effort against the Lightning will certainly be one to watch.
As Seen on the Toronto Star - The Leafs need to beat the Lightning, and they should. That doesn't mean they will
