Earlier this month, four teams - the Maple Leafs, the Senators, the Wild, and the Red Wings - played two games each in Sweden as part of the NHL's Global Series.

A report suggests that Gary Bettman and the NHL completely screwed the Toronto Maple Leafs.

NHL Pays Senators Instead of Maple Leafs in Global Series

The NHL rules state that for the Global Series, some games would be treated as home games and others as away games.

Teams that played "home games" in Sweden would be compensated by the NHL to cover the revenue of normal home games.

The Leafs took part in two games in Sweden and were both considered away games.

The Senators were paid for two home games.

Friedman says that when it comes to the global series, the league is basically robbing and has to pay for a home game's gate.

You'll notice that Ottawa had 2 Home games while Toronto had 2 away games simply because the NHL found it easier to cut a check with Ottawa #GoSensGo

The NHL Saved Money, but the Leafs will Get Paid Anyway

The Maple Leafs, as one of the biggest franchises in the NHL, earn around $4M per game. The Senators, on the other hand, earn around $1.5M per game.

The NHL saved a lot of money - nearly $5M.

Each NHL team plays 41 home games. With the two games played in Sweden, the Senators will end up playing 39 games in Ottawa this season, and the Leafs, 41 in Toronto.

The Leafs don't lose money and the NHL spends less. It's a win-win scenario.
