Kyle Dubas' contract in Toronto expires in the off-season, and he'll have many offers on the table if he doesn't stay in Toronto.
It now appears one offer could be too hard to pass up.
Penguins Willing to Write Dubas a Blank Check
There are multiple layers to this story.
The first is that the Penguins have now missed the playoffs for the first time since 2007, and are looking to shake things up. This will come with the near-certain firing of Ron Hextall, and likely the end of Brian Burke's tenure as well.
Here in Columbus, and everything I'm hearing both on location and on the drive out is that Ron Hextall will be fired, possibly Brian Burke, too. And very soon.
The next is that the Penguins happen to be owned by Maple Leafs Sports Entertainment (MLSE). Essentially, if Dubas were offered a position in Pittsburgh, it would be as good as an internal hire.
Finally, it appears that the Penguins are willing to pay Dubas anything it takes for his services.
Many a whisper that the allure for Dubas in Pittsburgh would be a blank check over Hockey Operations.
While he does love the Leafs, a blank check could be too hard to pass up for Dubas. The only question that remains is: will he win a cup in Toronto or Pittsburgh first?
