Shanahan announced that the team has relieved general manager Kyle Dubas of his duties and will not be renewing his contract for next season onward.
Despite there being reports of a long-term deal almost coming to fruition, it fell through as Shanahan had a change of heart after Dubas' end-of-season press conference expressing his uncertainty.
As Shanahan met with the media yesterday to clear the air, he made it clear that it was a business decision and the organization will be carrying on as usual. Shortly after the conference had concluded, Insider Frank Seravalli reported that Shanahan had issued a memo to all 31 other teams outlining who would be running all of the organization's day-to-day hockey operations.
Shanahan emphasized the importance of filling the role quickly, with a full general manager search set to begin early next week. With the uncertainty of who will take over, there have been rumours around the names Brad Treliving, Brandon Pridham, and Eric Tulsky as the frontrunners.
With Pridham as the short-term replacement as of now, this will give Shanahan and the Leafs time to sort out the direction they want to take heading into a crucial offseason.
