Chris Tanev is a veteran NHL defenseman with 14 years of experience and a total of 717 games. Tanev is a defense-first kind of player who would be a good compliment to many players in Toronto. He also grew up in Toronto and would be another hometown player who would be passionate about winning for the Leafs.
With his experience and leadership a trade for Chris Tanev would likely be expensive. We have come up with a mock trade that could make sense potentially. The details are as follows:
This would be an all-in move for the Leafs as they would give up their first-round pick and a top prospect in Nick Robertson. Timmins is a nice sweetener as well in the deal but would be stuck in a log jam if Tanev were acquired anyway. This would leave the Leafs with a defensive group that looks like the following.
Morgan Rielly Chris Tanev
T.J. Brodie John Klingberg
Jake McCabe Timothy Liljegren
Mark Giordano Simon Benoit
For the Flames they start to re-tool their roster for the future. Getting Timmins and Robertson allows them to fill their roster in and give young guys a chance to thrive. They also acquire the Leafs First Round pick which would likely be a late pick but would get them a good piece to build with.
With this trade, both teams address needs for their immediate future. It does however limit the amount of players that the Leafs have on team-friendly contracts which could be a problem in future years.
