Why Auston Matthews Is Poised For Breakout Season
Matthew on His Way to Another Rocket Richard Trophy?
Every season, Auston Matthews is in the talks for the Rocket Richard Trophy. He's among the best scorers in the NHL, and he showed it on Wednesday: in his first game of the season, he scored a hat trick.
Last season, during his "off year" in which he battled injuries, he scored 40 goals.
How many can he score if he remains healthy?
Interesting Take on Matthews' Season
In a recent video, the YouTuber Johnny Hawkey said some very convincing things about how Matthews could have the best season of his career and win another Rocket Richard trophy.
"Last season, Auston Matthews just didn't look like himself. Yes, he was battling some injuries, but even when he played, he just didn't seem right. He had an off year by his standards. Can you guess how many goals he put up in his "off year"? 40. I, for one, am so happy and thankful that he signed that four-year extension, so we don't have to hear TSN, Sportsnet, or even me talk about Matthews' signing prospects and desired salary all year. It's a done deal, thankfully.
On opening night, despite a lackluster performance from the Leafs, Matthews put the team on his back and willed them to victory. There's a video circulating that when he scored the hat-trick goal, there were so few hats flying because of the abundance of suits in the lower bowl. A few free scarves went flying out onto the ice, but other than that, it looked quite empty. I'm joking, of course. I'm sure there were plenty of hats. It's just that the video is amusing.
In the end, Mitch Marner scored the shootout winner, but make no mistake about it, Auston Matthews won this game for the Leafs. This was a superstar game-breaker doing game-breaking things. NHL 24 doesn't just hand out those X-factors to anyone. Nikita Zadorov isn't getting one anytime soon. But man, did Auston Matthews look formidable last night. Starting off a new four-year contract, a new season, and being healthy with three goals in one night? The league is on notice. I wouldn't be surprised if he clinched another Rocket Richard.
I say this fully aware that Brock Boeser currently leads in scoring with four goals, but I think Auston's going to surge ahead. With a game like that, the momentum starts rolling for someone as talented as him. This could be intimidating considering the number of goals he might score. Yes, I understand it's just one game, and slumps can happen. But Matthews has showcased throughout his career that he's a consistent and highly skilled goal-scorer. I can't see how this doesn't give him a significant advantage over the rest of the league, except for Brock Boeser, of course. But that's my point. I believe Matthews is the most talented goal scorer in the game right now. So, even though Boeser is also an excellent goal scorer, he's not on Auston's level. The additional confidence and mojo this gives Auston is undeniable.
And if he doesn't win the Rocket Richard, who will? Robertson? Ovechkin? Boeser? Let me know. I'll see you in the next one. Peace out." With a new extension coming in and possibly the best lineup we've seen in Toronto in recent years, Matthews could easily outscore Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
Let's hope everything goes well for him and he can win his third Rocket Richard trophy!
