The Toronto Maple Leafs' head coach Sheldon Keefe confirmed the status of Auston Matthews for tonight's game against the Washington Capitals.

As we reported earlier, Matthews missed today's morning skate. We now have new details on his absence.

Sheldon Keefe confirms that Auston Matthews is sick and he'll decide if he can play right before the game starts.

A virus has been circulating in the Toronto Maple Leafs' locker room for the past few weeks, forcing a few players to miss games, such as Tyler Bertuzzi. With Mitch Marner and Morgan Rielly still injured, the team's top six would be definitely suffering if Matthews were to miss tonight's game against the Capitals.

"As Leafs morning skate begins, Auston Matthews is absent. "

"This alignment at Leafs morning skate suggests Auston Matthews is likely to play

Mitch Marner, who is not playing, filling in on the top line."

Elliotte Friedman and Mark Masters confirmed his status:

"Auston Matthews game-time decision: illness"

Matthews has 11 points in his last five games. If he were to miss the game tonight, it would hurt his chances of reaching the 70-goal mark. He's only 11 goals away from it, and there's 11 games remaining to the Leafs' season.

Do you think he'll score 70 goals this season?

Stay tuned for more details.
