Brad Treliving's top priority isn't an Auston Matthews extension
Brad Treliving was officially named as the new General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Now that it's done, the real work will begin.
In the next couple of weeks, we're already going to be able to evaluate Treliving's decisions, both for the draft and regarding all the free agents on the Leafs' roster.
The name at the top of that list is Auston Matthews.
Even though he will only be a free agent next season, negotiations will clearly start sooner rather than later for their top player.
However, a former Leafs player revealed that it shouldn't be Treliving's top priority.
Brad Treliving's Top Priority Isn't an Auston Matthews Extension
Carlo Colaiacovo shared some interesting ideas on TSN's First Up.
According to him, Treliving should focus on Luke Schenn.
"You're starting with some nice pieces. You've got Morgan Rielly, T.J. Brodie, Mark Giordano, Timothy Liljegren, Connor Timmins, but there seems to be something missing.
So your first order of business is to find a way to bring back Luke Schenn. For years, they've been trying to find a steady partner for Morgan Rielly.
Other than Ron Hainsey and Brodie at times, Morgan Rielly's game has never been better than when he started playing with Luke Schenn. So that's a positive. You find a guy to play with Morgan Rielly.
Luke Schenn did more than anybody predicted for this Leafs team, and he really helped Rielly elevate his game. So that would be priority number one on the back endto find a way to keep Luke Schenn.
Not only will he help Morgan Rielly, but if you're serious about going further in the playoffs, it's players like Luke Schenn who help you succeed in the playoffs on defense.
It's players like him who are big and strong and make life miserable for other players in front of the net." Morgan Rielly's game has been at its peak this season when he was playing with Luke Schenn.
He's a useful player who truly wants to play in Toronto. Allowing him a contract is a no-risk decision that would benefit the team on the ice and in terms of the salary cap.
