Concern that the Toronto Maple Leafs may still have a major hole in their roster

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a potential weak spot in their roster that the team hasn't addressed in free agency, with uncertainty over who will fill it.

The Maple Leafs have a hole at their third-line center position. Toronto will likely move Max Domi up to the top-six wing with the departure of Tyler Bertuzzi to the Chicago Blackhawks. This opens up a spot at 3C, and without it addressed in free agency, it's up for grabs within the organization.

There are a few potential options if the Leafs focus on sticking with their existing players. One option could be one of the top prospects, Easton Cowan or Fraser Minten, taking on the role. Cowan has emerged as more likely to win a spot on the Leafs' roster, but Minten is the more natural center, with Cowan having moved to the wing in the OHL with the London Knights.

Another option is to play David Kampf on the third line. While it may be one of the most rational choices, Kampf lacks the flash of Minten or Cowan but is more mature. Kampf at 3C would likely force one or both of Cowan/Minten to the wing or back down, as a fourth-line role would not suit their games and would likely be won by Pontus Holmberg.

The Leafs could also sign one of the remaining free agents still on the board. The only top center remaining is Tyler Johnson. Toronto could also target someone on the trade block.

Another move Brad Treliving can make to send a message is to sign Blake Wheeler, a veteran player with experience, grit, and speed. He can fit on the first line with Auston Matthews or on the third checking line.
