Elliotte Friedman hints at a major off-season trade involving Marner

The renowned insider Elliotte Friedman hinted at a major off-season trade involving Toronto Maple Leafs' star Mitch Marner.

In an intervention on Sportsnet's 590 The Fan, Friedman said that Marner could be traded by the Maple Leafs this summer.

Since the start of the playoffs, Marner's input has been underwhelming during games, and he faced a lot of criticism for it.

Since then, many people have been calling out Marner, and even went as far as saying he could get traded by Brad Treliving instead of signing a contract extension.

According the Friedman, many things will come into consideration before that happens: the timeline, the contract negotiations, and what a trade could bring to the Leafs:

"The calendar determines all and we're going to get to a point where he can extend. It'll come down to a) how well he plays, b) what his next contract looks like and c) if it comes to a trade, what they're all willing to do together."

Friedman also compared Elias Pettersson from the Vancouver Canucks to Mitch Marner, stating that Marner puts a lot of pressure on himself, which makes him his own worst enemy:

"I think it's really critical. You look at Pettersson in Vancouver, you look at Marner in Toronto and you see a lot of similarities. You can see how both of those markets are reacting around those players early on. I think Marner is his own worst enemy in the sense that he puts a ton of pressure on himself in some ways I think he almost mentally straight jackets himself."
