Kuznetsov and the Carolina Hurricanes mutually agreed to terminate his contract so that he could go play in the KHL, but now that it appears he has a strong chance to remain in the NHL, the Leafs may be looking to pounce on that opportunity.
The Leafs have a very strong team that should make a deep run, however they lack a little bit of depth down their roster, and adding Kuznetsov would solve the depth issue in question, possibly allowing them to make a deeper run in the playoffs.
Kuznetsov was a top 6 player on the Capitals, however seeing how stacked the Leafs are on the first two lines, he could slot in nicely on their third line and be a real difference maker, also with a lot less pressure in a top 9 role.
Having Kuznetsov on the team also means that he can fill in for injured players, or for players who may be going through some struggles. Kuzy is a proven player that can slot in to the top 6 if needed here and there. The Leafs would love to have that luxury available, especially come playoff time.
Fans seem to love seeing Kuznetsov do his signature celebration when he scores highlight reel goals. Perhaps Leafs fans will get a taste of that next season.
