There's a lot of hype surrounding two of the Toronto Maple Leafs' most exciting prospects, Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten. Both men are expected to have a huge impact in the future core of the team and primed to be the next set of superstars after this current generation gets older.
But Toronto is in win-now mode and as much as they love the idea of their two forward prospects, they could end up using one as trade bait in order to get their elite center they desperately need.
NHL insiders Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne certainly realize the value of the two players, and spoke with former NHL Director of Scouting Jason Bukala about the trajectory of both me, and one player seems to reign supreme.
It's clear that Cowan has such a high trajectory, and his record-breaking 56 game point streak also helps him immensely. This is great news for Toronto both for the future and now.
If they want to hold onto Cowan, they have a potential stud on their second line who can lead alongside Auston Matthews and William Nylander in a few years.
Although injured, Cowan has 15 goals and 28 points in 20 games for the London Knights, and was named to Team Canada's World Junior roster but his status is undetermined.
However, the team could also dangle Cowan to a prospective team looking to dump a superstar's contract in order to accelerate their rebuild; such as the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Minten provides the win-now value Toronto needs and while he doesn't offer the offensive flair as Cowan, he ability to play a two-way game is in ways more enticing to Brad Treliving and Craig Berube.
Minten hasn't scored a ton but does have 4 points in 10 games, and has provided Toronto with a steadier bottom-line presence than they've had most of the season.
Whichever way Toronto wants to go, there's no doubt the future is bright whether that be with Minten and Cowan leading the charge, or either man looking on as Toronto lifts the Stanley Cup.
