Ilya Samsonov faces the media after failing to finish the job
The Toronto Maple Leafs' goaltender Ilya Samsonov finally faced the media after he failed to finish the job in game 7 against the Boston Bruins.
Following two great performances by Joseph Woll to keep the Leafs alive in games 5 and 6, an injury forced him to miss the seventh game. Sheldon Keefe had to send Ilya Samsonov between the pipes for the ultimate matchup.
Unfortunately, it didn't turn out well for the Leafs. Despite a strong performance, stopping 32 out of the 34 shots fired at him by the Bruins, he failed to stop the puck that mattered the most.
If you missed it, watch the goal here:
Today, the Leafs held their end-of-season interviews, and Ilya Samsonov finally opened up about his struggles.
He stated that he needed to play better against Boston, and that with his contract expiring, would like to remain in Toronto, as he loves the city and his teammates:
"Ilya Samsonov says he doesn't remember the last time he felt this down and adds "I needed to play better" in the series against Boston.
On his status as a pending UFA, he says: "I love this city. Love everybody on this team.""
