Quillan spent the last three seasons playing for Qunnipiac University of the NCAA. After an unremarkable freshman season, he skyrocketed up the depth charts in his sophomore year, putting up 19 goals and 38 points in 41 games.
Last season, he topped that with 46 points in 39 games before signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs. As an undrafted player, he is unlikely to ever play a huge role in the NHL, but one scout thinks that the foundations of his game are strong enough that he should turn into a consistent depth player for the team.
In fact, this scout is particularly optimistic about Quillan's chances of making the team as soon as this season. According to him, the young forward could be a call-up option this season, especially if some of the other young depth players on the team start to struggle. His playstyle could even make him a favorite for new head coach Craig Berube.
With that being said, Quillan did appear to struggle making the transition to the AHL last season. While he only got into 10 games combined between the regular and post seasons, he recorded just one assist and was a -9. However, he has also had some major clutch moments in his career, including the game-winning goal in the NCAA tournament final in 2023, where he unleashed a famous Teemu Selanne goal celebration.
Will Quillan make the jump to the NHL next season? If so, how many games will he play? Will he become a regular in the lineup for years to come? These are all questions that should be answered over the course of the coming season.
