On July 1, the Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly signed Jani Hakanpää to a two-year deal.
This had the fans of the Maple Leafs very excited because of the style of play he brings to the lineup.
However, just a few days after a report surfaced from Steve Simmons suggesting that Hakanpää has been dealing with a serious knee injury that could put an end to his career.
Amidst the speculation, no NHL insider has spoken about it. Nor has the organization officially released a press release about the signing.
This has people left scratching their heads, trying to figure out if he will suit up for the Maple Leafs this season, and if he doesn't, that would give the club more cap space than expected.
Today, though, there was a photo that surfaced of Hakanpää at an event taking a photo with a child, and he was wearing a Dallas Stars' jersey.
This instantly had Maple Leafs fans puzzled because why would he be wearing a former team's jersey when he isn't a member of their organization anymore?
Does this mean that the Maple Leafs and Hakanpää's deal has fallen through and the organization will be looking elsewhere to fill his spot?
As per Nick Barden of the Hockey News, the event was a Finnish charity golf tournament in Oulu, Finland.
Unfortunately, there hasn't been any talk from anyone in the "know," which leaves it to the NHL community to speculate what they think is going on with this Hakanpää and Maple Leafs' situation.
According to David Alter of the Hockey News, he has reached out to the Hakanpää reps for clarification on the contract situation, but he has received no response.
This has made the contract situation between the Maple Leafs and Hakanpää, all the more weird.
