Yesterday, the Toronto Maple Leafs organization confirmed that Auston Matthews would replace John Tavares and become the 26th captain in franchise history.
Following that press conference, hockey reporters covering the NHL have been debating what's coming for Tavares, the former captain.
While Brad Treliving confirmed that Tavares would be wearing an A on his jersey for the 2024-25 season, there's still some uncertainty surrounding his future with the team. After the next season, Tavares is set to become a free agent, and rumors of his departure from Toronto won't stop until a contract has been signed.
The insider Chris Johnston opened up about the situation on TSN's First Up earlier this week.
He said that contract negotiations with the Maple Leafs would likely start at some point.
With him stepping down from the captain role, he opens the door to get a smaller contract, which is the only way he could stay with his childhood team.
Considering how much Matthews looks up to Tavares, it would be surprising to see him leave the organization. If the new captain wants Tavares to stay on board, and Tavares is open to signing a small deal, Treliving has all the reasons to make it happen.
