Toronto Maple Leafs star center Auston Matthews is having the best year of his career. His goal scoring has reached another level as he set a new salary-cap era record with his 66th goal of the season.

The goal came about halfway through the 3rd period of tonight's game against the Devils. It was a rather key goal as well, as it gave the Leafs a two-goal lead late in the game.

AM34 scores his 66th of the season! 🚨🔥

Auston Matthews passes Alex Ovechkin for the most goals in a single season by any active player!

Prior to the goal, Matthews had been tied with Alex Ovechkin for most goals in a season by any active player. With the tally tonight, he moves past him on his way to the history books. He now leads all active players in single-season goals.

AM HAS 66! 🙌

Auston Matthews (@AM34) now has the most goals in a single season by any active player!

With four games left in the season, it is very possible that Matthews reaches the highly coveted 70-goal season. 60 goal years are rare enough as is, but if he crosses that threshold, the narrative about him could change into that of one of the best goal scorers of all time.
