The Maple Leafs could see former netminder Jack Campbell appear for the Detroit Red Wings tonight, having been called up by the Red Wings prior to the game against Toronto.
This would be the first game Jack Campbell has played against his former team since leaving the team in 2022 to sign with the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent.
Campbell has not played for the Detroit Red Wings this season, and has spent 2024-25 in the American Hockey League with Detroit's AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.
Campbell has played in two games for Grand Rapids, having a 0-2-0 record but a 2.55GAA and a .919sv%. Campbell had a 1-4-0 record with the Oilers in 2023-24, with a 4.50GAA and a .873sv%.
After a dominant career with the United States National Team Development Program (NTDP), Campbell was drafted in the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, 11th Overall by the Dallas Stars.
After forgoing the NCAA for the OHL, Jack played two seasons with Windsor and Sault Ste. Marie.
He made his NHL debut with Dallas in 2014, the same year he won the AHL Calder Cup with Texas.
The next few years, Campbell would continue to bounce around, going between the AHL and the ECHL, he was then traded to the Los Angeles Kings, looking like he'll never make good on his draft day position.
The Kings, who had success with developing goalies in the 2010's, started to give Campbell chances as a backup.
After starting the 2019-20 season with Los Angeles, Campbell was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2020.
The trade opened up a final starter opportunity for him. In 2021-22, he had a 31-9-6 record, with a 2.64GAA and a .914sv%, named a NHL All-Star.
Campbell signed with Edmonton as a free agent in the offseason, but struggled in two seasons, with a 3.53GAA and a .886sv% in 41 games with the Oilers. Campbell signed a one-year, $775k contract with Detroit in the offseason.
