Nazem Kadri was a staple of the Maple Leafs lineup for a decade. Since being drafted by the Maple Leafs 7th overall in 2009, Kadri has cemented himself as one of the better players in the league and has transformed himself from a reliable goal-scorer to one of Calgary's top weapons. In his last three seasons, he's quietly put together some of the best numbers in the league, with 218 points in 235 games, including a career-high 87 points; a massive 55-point leap from the previous season.
Although firmly entrenched in the makeup of the Calgary Flames, Nazem Kadri hasn't ruled out the potential for a reunion with his old club, as they are looking for some center help and could use someone of Kadri's ilk to get them over the hump. Speaking recently to reporters, Kadri let his feelings known about the Maple Leafs and the Toronto community as a whole:
A return to Toronto from Kadri would be an incredible coup for GM Brad Treliving; who signed Kadri while still GM of the Flames. Not only because they would bring back a former fan favorite, but with how Kadri has emerged in the playoffs with 44 points in 52 games, the Maple Leafs could use him no doubt. Envision a line with Kadri at center with Max Domi and a revitalized Nick Robertson; an incredible mix of veteran leadership, playmaking, scoring, speed, and passion.
It's not gonna be cheap, and Toronto will need to impress Calgary with a trade package worthy enough of Kadri. Perhaps Toronto could dangle one of their many defensemen in a package, add David Kampf, and ask really nicely for Calgary to retain his salary to make it happen. Plus there's always the issue of whether or not Kadri forgives the Maple Leafs
The Flames are in a weird spot, in a wide-open Pacific Division, where they are currently tied with three other teams with 11 points and don't want to risk losing a key part of their team in such a wild card division. It's not impossible, but it's definitely not the quickest deal to get done.
The addition of Nazem Kadri would undoubtedly improve the Toronto Maple Leafs both on and off the ice, as the former brash star has grown up and matured into a veteran of the game. The question isn't whether or not Kadri wants to come back, it's whether or not Toronto has the right pieces to bring him home.
