Whether or not the Leafs will in fact trade Marner has become a subject of much debate this summer. After the team was eliminated in the playoffs it seemed almost to be a certainty that the superstar winger would be moved, and rumors were coming out on a daily basis.
However, things slowly cooled off and it now appears as though Leafs management will take a different, slower approach. In the meantime, Leafs fans have been debating whether or not trading Marner even makes sense for the team.
In fairness to Marner, he has arguably been the most over scrutinized player in the entire NHL. Many Leafs fans have developed a love-hate relationship with him due to his apparent 'softness' and his lack of scoring in the playoffs.
This is why Stu Grimson believes the team will look to replace him with someone who is tougher, grittier, and can score too. He specifically mentions Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett as players that would make sense, even if neither of those players are currently available for trade.
Marner has appeared in 576 career NHL games since the Maple Leafs drafted him in the 1st round, 4th overall in the famous 2015 NHL draft that produced stars including Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel in addition to Marner. He has 194 career goals including two 30-goal seasons and 639 points, including three 90-point seasons. He set a career high in scoring in 2022-23 when he potted 30 goals and 69 assists for 99 points.
