It's no secret Paul Bissonnette loves the Toronto Maple Leafs, unabashedly praising or criticizing the team for their successes and failures. Not one to shy away from controversy or speaking his mind, the man known affectionately as 'Biz-Nasty' has endeared himself to hockey fans worldwide.
Clearly, Bissonnette has a hometown bias, and while there's nothing wrong with that, it does tend to draw the ire of opposing fans. So with his latest post on X, Bissonnette decided to poke a pretty large bear in Western Canada, asking Edmonton Oilers phenom and the league's best player to ditch Alberta and head back home to Toronto:
It's safe to say McDavid in Toronto would create something the NHL has never seen. The amount of publicity would be astronomical, and having McDavid and Matthews somehow on the same team could rewrite history books for decades. It necessarily isn't a waste of McDavid's talent, seeing as Edmonton has shown improvement and went to the Stanley Cup Finals last season (although this year is getting off to a less than fiery start), but they haven't won anything substantial and only made the Conference Finals twice since McDavid's been on the team; in 2022 and last year in 2023.
McDavid has been beyond generational since his arrival to the NHL. Scoring 986 points in 649 games, every time he touches the puck, magic seems to happen. Showing blistering acceleration and unmatched playmaking ability, McDavid has dominated the NHL and shows no signs of slowing down:
If McDavid were to somehow make his way to Toronto, there would be some serious roster movement as it would be impossible for Toronto to have their Core Four remaining if McDavid were brought in, but at McDavid's value; it's not a bad deal. With Mitch Marner's contract expiring this upcoming offseason, and McDavid only having a couple of years on his deal left; Toronto could play the long game and stockpile money in the hopes of persuading McDavid to come to Toronto while Matthews is still here. McDavid in Toronto next season is an absolute long shot, but let's take a look at the lines they may throw out there:
Knies -- McDavid -- Nylander
Domi -- Matthews -- Robertson
Pacioretty -- Minten -- Cowan
Lorentz -- Kampf -- Dewar
PP1: McDavid -- Matthews -- Nylander
Rielly -- Robertson
The team would lose Mitch Marner and John Tavares but they have more than enough weapons to cover for them, even if fans don't like the call.
Toronto would have a 1-2 punch that would rival any in the league, or any in NHL history and combine the league's best player with the league's best goal-scorer. Legendary.
