The 22-year-old restricted free agent is coming off a career-high 27-point season in only 56 games with the Maple Leafs and could be on his way to finally having a breakout season in the NHL.
Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, General Manager Brad Treliving, earlier in the offseason, Robertson made his plans clear for the 2024-25 season: he wants a fresh start with another team.
TSN's Chris Johnston talked about the situation, saying that the Leafs could potentially offer him a bigger role on the left wing, but the player is "sticking to the idea of playing for another team."
In his own words, as reported by David Alter on The Hockey News:
Of course, trading him could also bring an interesting return to the Maple Leafs. He's regarded as one of the team's most promising prospects, and teams looking to acquire his rights on the trade market would need to pay a hefty price. However, the longer Treliving waits, the more the offers could diminish in value. He also risks receiving offer sheets from other teams.
If that occurs, they'd be in a tough spot to match it, as they have almost no cap space available. Indeed, according to PuckPedia, they are going into the 2024-25 NHL season with only $1,275,333 available.
Robertson's situation will be interesting to follow in the coming weeks. Make sure to stay tuned to get up to speed on any developments regarding his future in the NHL.
