With the team heading back into action for a back to back starting on Friday, the Toronto Maple Leafs made a big call regarding their goaltending going forward.
The team officially recalled Matt Murray from the Toronto Marlies and reassigned Dennis Hildeby in response.
It's a good sign that Toronto wants to have Murray in the fold for the long-term, especially since Anthony Stolarz is going to miss a few more weeks as he continues to deal with an obstruction in his knee.
Having won his first start in 638 days last week, Murray gets the call again to be the backup to a suddenly struggling Joseph Woll. He looked a tad shaky in his debut but managed to pull out the victory in one of the NHL's feel-good stories of the season.
The team will need him more than ever especially if Woll continues to struggle. Over his last two games the young netminder has let in nine goals and has less than a .900 SV% in both as well. In order to get back to their winning ways it starts in the crease, and the team values veterans over potential; at least at this point.
Hildeby has struggled so far in his young NHL career, and although he has a 2-1-0 record, his 3.68 GAA and .875 SV% tell a different story. It's not that he can't perform at the NHL level but needs some more seasoning in the North American game before he can really get it going.
Murray has been solid in an emergency position for the Maple Leafs in his career having a 15-8-2 record with a 3.01 GAA and .902 SV%. The two-time Stanley Cup winner has made a name for himself even amidst some struggling seasons.
He owns a 147-86-24 record with a 2.79 GAA and .910 SV% with time spent in Pittsburgh, Ottawa and Toronto. After undergoing a bilateral hip surgery, he missed all of the 2023-24 NHL season, but managed to play a couple games for the Marlies at the end of the year.
The Maple Leafs and Murray will look to get back in the win column on Friday when they take on the Detroit Red Wings.
