The Toronto Maple Leafs are anxiously awaiting the return of Jani Hakanpaa and their strategy for his return has been revealed.

The defense for the Maple Leafs has been such an improvement over last season, it's a wonder why the team didn't focus on that knowing they had such a potent offensive group.

But one key signing who was meant to add a lot of toughness and help shut opponents down is Jani Hakanpaa.

The Finnish defender has played only twice, and now the team has an idea of what they want from him upon his return.

Jani Hakanpaa Aiming To Play For Maple Leafs Before 4 Nations Face-Off

While on TSN's Insider Trading, NHL Insider Chris Johnston touched on Hakanpaa's status and how he is aiming to not only get back for Team Finland, but the Maple Leafs:

"A quick note on Jani Hakanpaa, who hasn't played since November for the Leafs; he intends to be there at the tournament, he's hoping there's a couple of games before then but for now he's hoping to play."

It's a great sign that Hakanpaa wants to play for his team, as his surprising inclusion took fans a bit off guard. But it's also huge that he's aiming to get back to the Maple Leafs as his presence could definitely be used.

Not only an elite shutdown defender, he could give guys like Simon Benoit and Conor Timmins a much needed break, allow Oliver Ekman-Larsson to play on his preferred side, and would give Toronto another shot blocking weapon to help make their goalie's lives easier.

Signed initially to the team for two years, concerns about his injury history has shifted that into a one-year deal for $1.35M.

This season, Hakanpaa has only played in two games registering zero points, and four blocks but has averaged four goals, nine assists, 121 blocked shots and a staggering 222 hits over his last three campaigns.

If Hakanpaa can come back in time for a few games before the tournament it will be a great sign not only for Finland as they try to stake their claim as hockey's most dominant nation.

But Toronto too, as him being back for the season's most important stretch is just another weapon for Craig Berube to use.
