Teams are getting ready to make the final cuts ahead of the start of the 2024-25 NHL regular season, and we have an update to share concerning two former Leafs players.
After rumors of a buyout, the reporter Chris Johnston revealed that the Detroit Red Wings placed Justin Holl on the waiver wire, and that the goalie James Reimer hit the waivers after being cut by the Buffalo Sabres.
Justin Holl, 32, defended the Maple Leafs blue line between 2017 and 2023. Last season, he signed a three-year, $3,400,000 AAV with the Red Wings. Unfortunately, it looks like things aren't working out too well for him with his team. He is expected to join the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL, if he doesn't get claimed by a team in the next 24 hours.
As for James Reimer, he was drafted 99th overall in 2006 by the Maple Leafs, and spent six seasons in Toronto, between 2010 and 2016, before starting his controversial stint with the San Jose Sharks.
Last summer, Reimer signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Sabres, but it looks like Buffalo decided to go with Devon Levi and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to start the season.
However, he performed well last year with the Red Wings, ending the season with a 0.904 save percentage and 3.11 goals against average. Teams looking to add depth between the pipes could be interested in claiming him. He has a lot of experience, and goalies like that can play an important role in developing the young players.
The same thing goes for Holl. We can't imagine that a team can't benefit from his leadership and experience to help the younger guys.
