After their elimination at the hands of the Florida Panthers, Kyle Dubas mentioned that all players in the Core Four were staying in Toronto.
This was before the official hiring of Brad Treliving as General Manager.
Now that he's got the job, he needs to do the job. Treliving's plan for the team hasn't been revealed, but a renowned insider shared his thoughts on what Treliving should do with the Core Four.
On Sportsnet, Elliotte Friedman revealed that he believes Treliving will continue to use Dubas' strategy to build around the four players.
As everyone started to believe that at least one player among the four was going to leave the Leafs, it looks like maybe they'll stay after all.
This is a very important decision. If the players all want to stay, it shouldn't be that hard to sign Matthews and Nylander.
It's hard to know how this decision will impact the team in the long run, but placing a bet on Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, and Marner isn't risky.
If Treliving keeps all of them, he'll only need to move a few defensemen and maybe some bottom-six guys.
With the right decisions, the team could very well go further than the second round next year.
