The Toronto Maple Leafs are currently playing a very important regular season game against the Washington Capitals. Midway through the first period, Mark Giordano ripped a shot past the Capitals goalie putting the Maple Leafs up 1-0.
As you can see after scoring Mark Giordano pointed to the sky. This was something that he had never done before after scoring a goal. Naturally, fans got curious as to the meaning of the celebration, and eventually an answer was found.
It did not take long for a reason behind Mark Giordano's celebration to surface. According to NHL reporter Chris Johnston, the gesture was a tribute to Mark Giordano's father who recently passed away.
Mark's father Paul passed away in mid February suddenly. Now tonight Mark Giordano was able to properly give tribute to his dad in a very touching way.
This was Mark Giordano's first game back in the lineup in quite some time. Mark Giordano was activated from long-term injured reserve earlier today. As of now, the Maple Leafs lead 1-0 thanks to Mark Giordano's goal.
We wish Mark Giordano and his family all the best as they continue their journey through the loss of his father Paul.
