Vancouver mayor shuts down major playoff event due to public safety
The Vancouver Canucks are in a heated series against the Nashville Predators in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With the series heading to Nashville, many Canucks fans were looking forward to enjoying the game together at a team watch party. Sadly Vancouver's Mayor Ken Sim has put a stop to this tradition.
This afternoon several press releases confirmed news that Mayor Ken Sim would be shutting down viewing parties for Canucks playoff games within the city. The reason for the shutdown comes after fear of a riot breaking out.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim says there won't be public viewings for Canucks playoff games in the City of Vancouver due to safety concerns.'
"There will be no public gatherings to watch the Canucks' playoff games in Vancouver due to security concerns.".
The reason that Ken Sim is so hesitant to allow these public gatherings for Canucks games is solely due to past history. There have been past incidents in both 1994 and 2011 surrounding Vancouver Canucks playoff watch parties.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim says city won't rush any public #Canucks viewing parties, references riots in 1994 and 2011 as reasons to be concerned for public safety:
"Personally I would love to throw a party right now, but we have to be responsible."
While this of course is not the preferred outcome for the Vancouver Canucks fans hoping to see the away games in a community setting it is done for the best of intentions. Hopefully, as the playoffs go on the city of Vancouver can try to orchestrate a more safe environment where a watch party could become possible.
