Initially, Matthews was injured on Thursday in Florida when Carter Verhaeghe's attempted dump-in struck him in a delicate area.

During Toronto's visit to the Hurricanes, Matthews faced another blow as Jesper Fast's skate hit him directly in the groin following a faceoff.
Matthews went down instantly and remained on the ice for a moment, but he managed to continue playing in the game.
