A Massive Trade Issue is Arising for Canadian Teams

While there are many upsides to playing for Canadian teams, including the most passionate fans in the league, and some of the best hockey culture in the world, there are equally downsides.

While the weather may be a deterrent, the main reason players don't want to come to Canada is the tax. When 99% of your salary falls in the highest tax bracket, you end up taking home much less than you've earned.

With the implementation of no move clauses and no trade clauses becoming a often-used tactic by teams to appease players, this poses a massive issue for Canadian teams.

Many players with a 10-team no trade list will have all seven Canadian teams on it.

On the 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek explained this issue in depth, and came to the conclusion that Canadian teams are at a significant disadvantage when it comes to trading.

One team that has dealt with this is the Ottawa Senators. Ottawa is arguably the least desirable Canadian franchise to play in, and most players with no-trade clauses have the team on their list.

Hopefully this won't get in the way of a few fun blockbuster Canadian trades this season.
