The pandemic has reportedly changed plans in the NHL offices, according to the respected Chris Johnston.
After Seattle joined the NHL, officials wanted to put the brakes on adding new franchises.
Now they've changed their minds.
"Someone predicted to me during the pandemic that, you know, these owners obviously took on a lot of water during the pandemic, when they couldn't sell tickets to their buildings and all those kinds of things.
And this future expansion would be a way to recoup some of those losses. So that will be something. I'm not saying this on the immediate horizon, but, you know, maybe in a year or two we're talking about expanding the league beyond 32."
While the chances of ever seeing a franchise in Quebec City again are slim, barring a move, Quebec Nordiques fans are sure to love this news.
However, American cities such as Houston, Kansas City, Milwaukee and Hartford would be much more likely to receive a new team, via expansion.
"It's possible that in a year or two, we're talking about adding new expansion teams, in the National Hockey League, to have more than 32 teams." - Chris Johnston
Recall that the Seattle Kraken cost $650 million.
