In the most recent draft, Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes traded his young defenseman Alexander Romanov, along with another pick, to the Islanders for a first round pick, 13th overall.
According to Shane Kelly, director of analytics at SMT, a company that specializes in advanced statistics, this transaction is a real steal for the CH's GM.
« I really liked this deal for the Habs. With the season he had last year, to get such a good pick for him was a fantastic return. To be honest, in his first season in the NHL, he played very well, but last season it was the complete opposite. He was one of the worst regular defensemen in the entire NHL. I think the team management wondered who the real Alexander Romanov was and came to the conclusion that he was the one we saw last year. That's why they decided to trade him even though he was so beloved by the fans and his teammates." -Shane Kelly
Of course, it was this pick that was later used to acquire center Kirby Dach from the Chicago Blackhawks.
