Air Canada Might Have Been Caught Trying to Rig the World Junior Championship
If there's one thing Canadians have incredible pride for, it's our hockey.
We eat, breathe, and sleep the sport, and there is no better feeling than seeing our team win championships.
However, it appears an act of this nationalism may have gone too far.
The World Junior Championship begins today, and a massive red flag has been exposed.
The Czech Republic's star player, and recent sixth overall pick David Jiricek arrived in Halifax today for the conference. However, when he arrived, he found out that his equipment had been left in Toronto, where his connecting flight had been from Cleveland, Ohio, where he plays for Columbus' AHL affiliate.
Jiricek's agent, Allan Walsh, took to Twitter to explain the situation:
Air Canada customer support is a disaster, an outrageous embarrassment of a company. NHL 6th overall pick David Jiricek flew from Cleveland (AHL) to Halifax thru Toronto. Numerous cancelled flights, now he's in Halifax for #WJC with no gear, no skates, no sticks. @AirCanada.
The last scan of David's gear was Toronto. They don't know where gear is or when will arrive in Halifax. The opening Czechia game of #WJC is against Canada tomorrow. Sat on hold for 2.5 hours, then line went dead. How about some accountability for @AirCanada! Michael Rousseau?
While most players could go to any sporting goods store, Jiricek is 6'4», and wears a custom size 13 skate.
This has led people to believe that Air Canada is rigging the tournament in Canada's favour. If there is one player that could shut down Canada's offensive prowess, it's Jiricek.
Now, due to his missing equipment, it's entirely possible Jiricek misses his first game of the tournament. Whether this is intentional or not, this is a serious issue.
Hopefully all will work itself out, as Team Czech Republic will be decimated without their star.
