The Columbus Blue Jackets have released a statement following news that 24-year-old goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks, a member of the organization, passed away while attending July 4th celebrations. The full statement can be read below:
The statement from the Blue Jackets differs somewhat from a statement released by the Latvian Hockey Federation which said Kivlenieks died after being hit in the heart area while fireworks were being set off. However, the news is still very fresh and we're certain everything will become clear as time passes.
This is an absolutely tragic accident for a man who had his whole life ahead of him and, by all accounts, appeared to be an excellent goaltending prospect. Our sincere condolences to family, friends and fans of Kivlenieks at this extremely difficult time.
