In recent weeks, Finnish commentator Tero Kainulainen has gone two games without mentioning the name of Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin.
Kainulainen claims he did it as a silent protest against Russia's involvement in Ukraine and Ovechkin's relative silence.
"I set myself a goal before tonight's NHL game at PIT vs. WSH. I avoided mentioning the guest captain's name. "I finished my challenge," Kainulainen said on Twitter (translated from Finnish).
Ovechkin is, of course, the most recognizable and famous athlete in Russia, and his silence on the Ukrainian conflict has shocked many fans.
When Ovechkin got the puck or made a play, Kainulainen never said Ovy's name? Well, he called the game as usual, but referred to Ovechkin as «captain of the Capitals».
Kainulainen's silent protest was meant to raise awareness of the situation in Ukraine without making a big statement.
In his words, «words are the most important resources in the world, yet silence can be heard far and wide.»
