Don Cherry Breaks His Silence on the Fighting Ban in Junior Hockey
Don Cherry never shy's away from a debate. With the pending ban of fighting in the QMJHL, Cherry has now shared his take.
Cherry Shares His Opinion
The QMJHL has recently announced that they'll be banning fighting for the 2023-24 season.
This decision has come under scrutiny due to the limited roles it will give players that aren't just skill-based.
Now, Don Cherry has shared his take. On an interview with Bobby Nadeau, who was involved in a violent incident with Patrick Roy in his Q days.
With his history, Cherry expected that he would be for the fighting ban, but it was quite the contrary.
«He got the heck kicked out of him so they thought 'This is a good guy to talk to because he would be against fighting' but he was pretty good," said Cherry on his most recent podcast. "He said 'This could lead to more vicious play', and the other thing he said was 'Will lead to players feeling more brave with their stick' and nobody expected him to be the guy [to take that position.»
"Is this going to fully abolish fighting?" asked Nadeau as per the Canadian Press. "Maybe it'll be at a lower frequency. But if fights become illegal, it'd be equally important to double down on cheap shots and hits to the head.»
This is a great point, as without the threat of fighting, star players will be targeted.
While the Q has its reasons to make this decision, it doesn't feel very well thought through.
