According to Darren Dreger, the Colorado Avalanche and Gabriel Landeskog are not making progress on a contract extension. This is concerning, because Landeskog has the option to join with any team he wants beginning July 28th. The Avalanche still have two weeks to reach an agreement, but the clock is ticking.
Landeskog's value to Colorado is undeniable, as he has been the team's captain since his second NHL season. Landeskog scored 20 goals and totaled 52 points in 54 games during the regular season. As a result, he is unquestionably one of their top attacking players. It will also be difficult to find a free agent who can replace his tenacity and great two-way play.
If he does become a free agent, he will undoubtedly find a number of suitors. Los Angeles Kings, Boston Bruins, and St. Louis Blues are three teams that come to mind as possible fits. They've all expressed a desire to add a top-six winger. That, however, will only be the beginning, as a player of Landeskog's ability does not come along very frequently. Every team with cap room should get in touch with him.
As a result, the Avalanche will have to work incredibly hard to complete the extension. Clearly, what they're doing currently isn't working, and it's getting a little annoying.
