This week, Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal disclosed how much the team's next contract could cost them. He said a high-profile Canadian player had the closest similar contract to Pettersson at this level of his NHL career.
"I was told from day one that the number one comparison for Pettersson is Mitch Marner, and that is going back to his first agent," said Dhaliwal.
Marner's current deal carries a cap hit of $10.9 million per season, which would be a huge burden for the Canucks to bear. The speculated 5 x $9 million agreement for Minnesota Wild standout forward Kirill Kaprizov may possibly drive up the price of Pettersson's new deal.
"He scored a ton of points in his entry level contract and now its time to buck up," said Dhaliwal when describing why he believes Pettersson is destined for a huge day.
Dhaliwal compares Pettersson's regular season production to both Marner and Kaprizov, and he believes the Canucks will have to open their financial constraints to get this contract done.
