The annual league award is presented to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities both on and off the ice, as well as has made a significant charitable impact in his community.
In deciding the finalists and winner, the selection committee, headed by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, will use the following criteria:
Clear and measurable positive impact on the community
Investment of time and resources
Commitment to a particular cause or community
Commitment to the League's community initiatives
Creativity of programming
Use of influence; engagement of others
The winner of first place will receive a $25,000 donation to a charity or charities of his choosing. The two runners-up will each receive a $5,000 donation to their favourite charity or charities.
This award has never been given to a current or former Golden Knights player.
The NHL's Board of Governors unveiled the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 1988 to honor Frank "King" Clancy, a beloved figure in the League for decades as a player, referee, coach, manager, and goodwill ambassador. Clancy was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players during the League's Centennial Celebration in 2017. He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and a 1958 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
