Acquiring top-four defender Mackenzie Weegar, a 1st round pick, and prospect Cole Schwindt would have already been a coup for the Flames, but they equally acquired franchise winger Jonathan Huberdeau.
Huberdeau was coming off of a monstrous 115 point season in Florida, and was inked to an eight-year, $84-million dollar extension before he ever played a game for the Flames.
This contract will make him one of the highest paid players in the NHL until he is edging 40 years old.
That contract, despite not even starting for another year, is looking disastrous for the Flames.
Huberdeau has been brutal so far this season, and he has now been demoted to the third line. This effectively makes him the highest-paid bottom-six player in the league.
He will join a line of Michael Backlund and Trevor Lewis.
