The trade between the Canadiens and the Calgary Flames is very beneficial for the Habs.
Not only did Kent Hughes get the chance to pick up a player who should be back in top shape with two new hips, but he also gets a conditional first round pick in 2025.
Here are the conditions in question:
1. If Calgary's 2024 first-round pick is between ranks 20-32 (inclusive) once the final order of the 2024 NHL Draft is determined, then Montreal has the option (up to 48 hours before the start of the 2024 NHL Draft) to trade Calgary's 2025 or 2026 first-round pick for Calgary's 2024 first-round pick, or ;
If Florida's 2025 first round pick is traded to Calgary (under the terms already established in a previous trade)
2. In the event that the conditions necessary to activate Montreal's option as described in #1 above are not met or Montreal declines the right to exercise the option, the following conditions shall prevail:
1) If Calgary's 2025 first round pick and Florida's 2025 pick (previously acquired by Calgary) are not in the top 10 of the 2025 NHL Draft (once the final order of the 2025 NHL Draft is determined), then Montreal will receive the better-positioned pick between the two or ;
2) If Calgary's 2025 first round pick is in the top 10 and Florida's 2025 first round pick (previously acquired by Calgary) is not in the top 10 (once the final order of the 2025 NHL Draft is determined), then Montreal will receive Florida's 2025 first round pick.
3) If Florida's 2025 first round pick (previously acquired by Calgary) is in the top 10 and Calgary's 2025 first round pick is not in the top 10 (once the final order of the 2025 NHL Draft is determined), then Montreal will receive Calgary's 2025 first round pick or ;
If Florida's 2025 first round pick is NOT traded to Calgary (as per the terms already established in a previous trade)
3. In the event that the conditions necessary to activate Montreal's option as described in #1 above are not met or Montreal declines the right to exercise the option, the following conditions shall prevail:
1) If Calgary's 2025 first round pick is not in the top 10 (once the final order of the 2025 NHL Draft is determined), then Montreal will receive Calgary's 2025 first round pick, in addition to :
1) If Florida's 2025 first round pick is not in the top 10 (once the final order of the 2025 NHL Draft is determined); and
2) If Florida's 2025 first round pick is traded to another team; and
3) If Florida's 2025 first round pick is better positioned than Calgary's 2025 first round pick; then Montreal will receive Calgary's 2025 fourth round pick.
2. If Calgary's 2025 first round pick is in the top 10 (once the final order of the 2025 NHL Draft is determined), Montreal will receive Calgary's 2025 first round pick, subject to the following condition:
1) In the event that Calgary's 2025 first round pick is the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft (once the final order of the 2025 NHL Draft is determined), Calgary will retain its 2025 first round pick and Montreal will instead receive Calgary's 2025 third round pick and a conditional first round pick in 2026. Montreal will receive the better-positioned of Calgary's 2026 first-round pick or Florida's 2026 first-round pick (once the final order of the 2025 NHL Draft is determined), (previously acquired by Calgary).
In summary, as Chris Johnston of TSN reports, depending on how the terms play out in the Sean Monahan trade, Montreal could potentially end up with one of the following picks:
2024 1st (CGY)
2025 1st (CGY)
2025 1st (FLA)
2026 1st (CGY)
2026 1st (FLA)
The CH could also get a third round pick in 2025 from the Flames or a fourth round pick from the Flames in 2025.
If the stars align, Hughes gives himself additional options to potentially get a pick higher than a late first round pick.
