Ivan Provorov Releases a Controversial Statement Regarding His Boycott of the Flyers Pride Jerseys
Ivan Provorov sent shockwaves through the NHL last night when he refused to take warmups in the Philadelphia Flyers pride jerseys.
The Flyers released a statement following the events:
The Philadelphia Flyers organization is committed to inclusivity and is proud to support the LGBTQ+ community. Many of our players are active in their support of local LGBTQ+ organizations, and we were proud to host our annual Pride Night again this year. The Flyers will continue to be strong advocates for inclusivity and the LGBTQ+ community.
In an interview after, Provorov explained his decision:
I respect everybody and I respect everybody's choices. My choice is to stay true to myself and my religion.
Then, head coach John Tortorella came to his defense:
This is in harsh contradiction to the punishment Tortorella gave players who kneeled during the national anthem a few years ago.
No matter where you stand on this debate, it is an unequivocal disaster for the Philadelphia Flyers.
