The key issue today for Quenneville is whether or not the NHL will let him to return to the bench, especially given the league's public relations dilemma.
It won't be as simple as signing a new contract with an NHL team; if Quenneville wants to return to the league, he must be personally reinstated by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
When you consider that allowing Quenneville to return may reflect poorly on Bettman, it's a tough sell.
His qualifications, on the other hand, are undeniable.
With 1,768 regular season NHL games and an extra 225 playoff games under his belt, Quenneville is a seasoned NHL head coach. He has a regular-season record of 969 wins, 572 losses, 77 draws, and 150 overtime defeats, as well as a postseason record of 121 wins and 104 losses.
Over the course of his long coaching career, he has made 20 playoff appearances and, of course, three Stanley Cup wins, all of which he won as head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks.
