We're sad to see Jesperi Kotkaniemi go, but he can't turn down a $6.1 million contract in Carolina. Fascinatingly, the Finn will make as much as some of the NHL's top players.
Brad Marchand earns $6.125M with the Bruins. Marchand easily averages 80 points every season and is a great defender, but Kotkaniemi barely averages 40 points per season and isn't as good a defender.
You may add Aleksander Barkov ($5.9M) from the Florida Panthers and Nathan MacKinnon ($6.3M) from the Colorado Avalanche. Two more bankers, but two of the NHL's most dominant forwards.
To be fair these are older contracts but man did Kotkaniemi bank on this deal.
