Vasquez stabbed the younger Beck, 20, in the abdomen during an incident at a Hamilton home party in July 2020. Beck died afterwards.
"I didn't want to hurt your or my family. This was a chance encounter that soon escalated "Vasquez told his family, which included retired NHLer Barry Beck.
According to the CBC, Vasquez and Beck got into a verbal spat while driving. Unclear why they fought, but Vasquez apparently followed Beck out of the car, and a fight ensued.
Both males were allegedly drunk at the time of the fight.
Vasquez has no past criminal record and was reportedly sorry for his actions. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and has repeatedly apologized to the Beck family.
"He has no priors. He pled guilty and did not intend to kill Mr. Beck "Vasquez's counsel stated in court. "He is deeply sorry for what he has done."
