P.K. Subban announced his retirement this morning, as did Keith Yandle and Zdeno Chara. The former Canadiens defenceman will now be able to focus on his post-career in the media.

33 years old, it seems young to retire, but it is a decision that was reflected by the main interested party. Indeed, the number 76 had the option to join two teams, otherwise he would not continue.

At least that's what independent journalist Patrick Lortie said.

I don't know if it's 100 per cent true, but two different NHL employees told me that P.K. Subban wanted to come back to Montreal for one last contract or a chance at the Stanley Cup with the Maple Leafs. Neither team was interested, so he confirmed his retirement."

To be sure, Subban has always had his heart set on Montreal, having grown up a fan of the Sainte-Flanelle. However, the former defenceman is a Toronto native, so the choice to try to win a Stanley Cup with the Maple Leafs, in addition to being close to home, made sense as well.
