Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson and executive vice-president Jeff Gorton both prepared statements saying,
"We are very excited to add Kent Hughes to our organization. Kent is highly-respected in the hockey world, having built an excellent reputation as an NHL player agent for over 25 years now," said owner Geoff Molson in a prepared statement.
"The process of finding our new general manager afforded us the opportunity to meet a number of extremely qualified candidates. Kent stood out, and we believe he is the right person to be the general manager of the Canadiens. We also believe that Kent's experience as an agent will be a great asset to the organization," declared the executive vice-president of hockey operations, Jeff Gorton in the same statement.
Patrick Roy who was hoping to get that position from the moment the Habs fired former GM Marc Bergevin. The Canadiens and Avalanche goaltending legend would make a statement after finding out Kent Hughes was hired saying,
"I'd like to congratulate Kent Hughes for his nomination and I'm wishing him all the success required to execute his new functions. Thanks to the organization for considering my candidacy in the process that was put in place."
Roy was no doubt disappointed that he wasn't the man for the job in Montreal where he had an amazing career winning 2 Stanley Cup in 1986, and 1993 but was dealt to the Colorado Avalanche leaving the Canadiens on bad terms.
Since then things are better now between the Canadiens and their former goaltender having his jersey retired at the Bell Centre, but there's always going to be that part Habs fans will be wondering what if? What if the Canadiens hired Patrick Roy as the general manager of the Canadiens, I guess will never know.
