The 33-year-old former Montreal Canadiens defenceman, P.K. Subban, announced his retirement before the start of the regular season, a surprise to many, after a huge contract that paid him $9 million a year.

In an interview with the Toronto Sun, Subban admitted he was surprised he didn't receive a contract offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers.

"I was pretty surprised," Subban said. I had a feeling I could have helped a number of teams. As a free agent, I wanted to play on a contending team. I think Edmonton showed some interest. Carolina had shown some interest. I didn't have any discussions with the Maple Leafs. They weren't interested in signing me."

He added:

"Money was never an issue for me. It was about the opportunity to come and help a team win. I wanted to win a Stanley Cup. But those opportunities never came my way."

In 13 NHL seasons, Subban, who won the Norris Trophy on one occasion, played 13 National Hockey League seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils, totaling 467 points (115 goals, 352 assists) in 834 career games.
