Teams Actively Looking to Circumvent the Salary Cap By Acquiring an Interesting Player
Gustav Nyquist is a very special player. He may not wow on the scoresheet, and he may be slower than he used to be, but he is arguably the best possession forward in the league.
Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending injury last week. Logically, this would seriously hurt his trade value for the Columbus Blue Jackets, but with the flat-cap requiring creativity with the LTIR system, Nyquist's value has actually increased.
If a team can acquire him now, place him on LTIR, and then activate him to use him with no penalty in the playoffs, they'll essentially add this puck-posession monster for free.
Only in the current state of the NHL can this be said unironically, but which team will win the sweepstakes for the 33-year-old with an injured shoulder?
We will have to wait and see.
